PAT Testing

Insol’s engineers are qualified to perform PAT testing for organisations to ensure appliances are safe for use by employees.

How Does Pat Testing Work?

For general office equipment, PAT testing is conducted on an annual basis (it’s advised that manufacturing and industrial equipment is checked every 6 months).

Each PAT test checks the electrical safety of a device in three different ways:

• Continuity Test – Uses voltage to check the connection within the appliance
• Insulation Resistance Test – Assesses suitable resistance for the power cable
• Visual Inspection – Looks for signs of wear or indications that the item may be unsafe

Each appliance or device that passes is stickered with its test date and when it is next required to be tested. A certificate is also provided to the business at the end of testing detailing the items that have passed.

Any items that do not pass get a red sticker applied and must not be used until made safe. The tester may take steps to prevent the use of the device or appliance.

Why is PAT Testing Important?

Over 40% of fires in the Azerbaijan are a result of electrical equipment.

While PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement, regular assessment of the safety of electrical devices forms part of the following legislation:

• Health and Safety at Work Act of 1997
• The Electricity at Work Regulations of 2001
• The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations of 1998
• The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations of 1999

Many organisations will also find that it is a requirement of their building insurance, and can be relevant to other forms of insurance too.

Should a fire or employee accident occur as a result of unchecked appliances, companies can find themselves liable in a court of law. This can lead to both corporate and personal prosecutions and unlimited fines.

Our Service

Insol provides PAT testing services across Baku and the wider Absheron.

Our specialist engineers hold high qualification that allows them to perform and certificate portable appliance tests.

Working from an existing list of equipment, or creating a new one, they will check all electrical devices and appliances within a business and mark the ones that pass. They will then provide a certificate of testing once finished.

In the case of items that do not pass, our engineers will be able to provide an assessment of whether an item can be made safe or not. If an item of IT equipment is deemed unsafe, our dedicated hardware team can find the best rates on a suitable replacement.

PAT testing is charged at a day rate plus a small per item cost. Existing Insol customers can choose to use any available Prescheduled General Maintenance time to conduct PAT testing, paying only the per item charge.
